The Drink
The Caipirinha is a rustic mash of lime, sugar, and Cachaça (distilled sugarcane), and deserves it’s place in the international cocktail canon, due to it’s playful and vibrant personality, capable of evoking a sun-drenched beach and relaxed Brazilian attitude, even in the darkest of dive bars.
Similar to the Daiquiri with its three-ingredient simplicity, this cocktail is a wonderfully sour and sweet showcase for Brazil, hailing from the Caipiras, a hardy rural section of Brazils population, with rich folkloric and culinary traditions. As with many great cocktails, the stories say it was originally used as a remedy, in this case for Spanish Flu post World War One. A stretch? Well who’s to say no, better safe than sorry!
Today, an ice-cold Caipirinha is one of the most mouth-wateringly refreshing drinks you’ll taste, with a rich tropical funk that tantalises your senses. Sink into the warmth of a tropical summers day, and imagine yourself stepping out of a Brazilian rainforest to a beautiful secluded waterfall, the water fresh, blue and vibrant as a flock of multi-coloured parrots fly overhead.

THE STORY
The word “Caipirinha” is derived from the Portuguese term "caipira," which refers to someone from the countryside. In a playful twist, “-inha” is a diminutive suffix, adding a touch of affection or endearment. So, in essence, Caipirinha might translate as "little countryside drink”. Initially seen as a "poor man's drink," cachaça has ancient roots in Brazil, dating back to the 1500s, so it was important to us to find a Cachaça that captured the true spirit of Brazil.
After spending two months in South America drinking daily Caipirinhas from over 50 different bars, we decided on a national favourite brand of Cachaça which felt to us like the true spirit of Brazil. The difficulty, was in getting the sweet and sour balance just right, leaving your taste buds watering for more, yet quenching your thirst with the most incredible zesty lime, that needed to feel like it had been squeezed into your glass just minutes ago, the aroma of lime rind still fresh in the air.
Finally, we had it. The captured essence of Brazilian beach life in a glass. Every sip was transporting us back to those long sweltering afternoons on Ipanema beach, to the graffitied dive bars of the Favelas, and the sweaty heat of the Salsa beat filled evenings, watching the locals dive through the surf or kicking a football late into the evenings on the beach. Why not grab a can, and join us on a trip there?
