    British Countryside Blackberry Gin Bramble

The Blackberry Bramble is one of the few cocktails that fall under the category of "modern classics". Originally created by the legendary Dick Bradsell whilst working at Fred's club in Soho, it was intended as a twist on a Singapore Sling, inspired by Dicks own childhood growing up in the Isle of Wight.

There's no secret about why this cocktail has become a timeless favourite. Starting with a London dry gin as it's base, bursting with rich notes of juniper, angelica root and coriander seed, it takes the foragers part one step further and stirs it up with rich blackberry liqueur, and a healthy squeeze of fresh lemon juice for the sour component.

Served over crushed ice, it's a cocktail that oozes adult class in spades, whilst taking a small part of your senses back to picking berries as a child. Sit back and sip on this delicious autumn cocktail, as the oak trees turn golden around you, and the squirrels playfully dart through the foliage in search for newly fallen acorns.

    THE STORY

This is one of those cocktails whose story literally creates itself. Created by Dick Bradsell in memory of his childhood on the Isle of Wight picking blackberries in Autumn, there didn't seem a need to fix what wasn't broken.

We love an autumn walk through the countryside, and nothing brings more childlike pleasure to these wakes than stumbling across bushes loaded with ripe blackberries, just begging to be tasted. We wanted the primary note of this cocktail to be rich, deep blackberry, at the perfect moment of ripeness in the season, and to enjoy this from a coastal lookout with a chill wind blowing.

Choosing a pink gin from Devon to set the scene, we added tart blackberry juice until we couldn't take any more, balanced it with a strong sour note with lemon juice, and added just a hint of sugar until the balance struck an obsessively moreish note. We hope you fall in love with this cocktail as much as we have!

    SERVE THE PERFECT Blackberry Bramble

    CHOOSE THE RIGHT GLASS
Being a rich, warming drink, the bramble lends itself well to a faceted tumbler glass. The deep violet colour dazzles superbly over ice, and the short glass reminds you that this is a strong, sipping cocktail, as sweet and delicious as it might seem at first glance.

    PREPARE WITH ICE
A Bramble can either be served on the rocks, as a sophisticated sipping cocktail like a Negroni, or you can enjoy it in a longer style by switching out for crushed ice. Either way this is a cocktail you don't shake, but stir, as you want the velvety richness of the blackberry to stay pure, and not contaminated by ice shards.

    MAKE THE PERFECT GARNISH
This is a fairly simple cocktail to garnish, though you can create an incredibly sophisticated look with very little effort. Obviously fresh blackberries on a mini wooden skewer is a go to, not only as a visual cue but to remind the drinker what that fresh blackberry tastes like off the bush. The other element to add is a splash of green to set off the colour, and conjure up the feeling of a herb garden or hedgerow. We suggest fresh mint, rosemary, or for a bold stroke, lemon thyme.
