Steeped in history, as one of the oldest cocktails, the Manhattan embodies the zeitgeist of New York in the late 19th Century. Blended with sweet vermouth, a nod to the large Italian immigrant population, its heady mix of American rye whiskey ignites the night with a potent dash of bitters, blending sharp high notes and herbal undertones with flair, and delicious subtlety.

The Manhattan, in modern times, is less widely known than its cousin, the Old Fashioned. Those who have been acquainted however, revel in the rich whiskey flavour, layered over an even richer palate of sweet vermouth. It’s about as sophisticated a cocktail as you’ll find, made for evening sipping.

Served ice cold and straight up, you’ll be transported to the skylines of New York, gazing out at the Upper East Side and the twinkling lights of the penthouse high rise blocks. Luxury and style ooze from you as the waistcoated barman tops you up with a knowing wink.

THE STORY

It was easy enough to decide where in the world to craft the story of our Manhattan from. It’s in the name, after all. So what makes the great city of NYC so iconic? Starting with the whiskey base, we wanted to go with a traditional rye for more complexity than you get from bourbon. So imagine our delight, when we found a traditionally distilled rye whiskey, inspired by the ragtime music movement of New York in the 1920s?

Ragtime was a fusion African American music genre that gave birth to Jazz, and is reminiscent of basement piano bars in the Great Gatsby. We wanted to show all sides of the great city though, not just the extravagance, so we decided to capture the autumn foliage of Central Park with some rich, amber maple syrup, and the smoky sidewalks of Brooklyn with a heavily peated scotch whiskey.

More than just a Manhattan, our cocktail is a true melting pot of every aspect of New York from the turn of the century, transporting you to a time of industry, extravagance and a vast contrast of fascinating and eccentric people, from the super wealthy to the super poor. SERVE THE PERFECT Manhattan

CHOOSE THE RIGHT GLASS
A Manhattan is an iconic, sophisticated serve that you want to do justice do. This really only belongs in a classic martini glass, as deep as possible and made of delicately thin glass. Don't be tempted to riff on this, sometimes the old way is the best way.

PREPARE WITH ICE
As a strong, whiskey based cocktail, the luxuriance of a Manhattan needs no dilution. Do not, under any circumstances, shake this cocktail over ice, as the splinters of shattered ice will seep through the cocktail, ruining the velvety feel. Put a large ice cube or block in a beaker or wide glass, pour the liquid over it, then stir rapidly for 60 seconds to chill the cocktail. Strain into the glass to remove the ice and you're done. Try freezing the martini glass for an hour before for a super cool frosted serve.

MAKE THE PERFECT GARNISH
There are so many intense flavours in a Manhattan, it really needs little garnish. The classic serve is to take a Luxardo brand Maraschino cherry (no other) and either drop into the cocktail, or put on a wooden skewer above the class. If you like, tip a little of the juice from the jar into the bottom of the cocktail. It makes an incredibly delicious treat once you get to the end.
